Jim Rothe's Engine Parts Order, 84 Mazda RX-7 13B, December 1998

This is the engine order that I had shipped to Bret DePedro, Rotary Performance in Manassas, VA. Bret rebuilt my engine for $400, plus another $200 for street porting. Bret also found a used GSL-SE rotor for me for $100, necessitated after this engine coughed up an apex seal after only about 140k miles. I removed and reinstalled the engine myself, with a little help from my buddy Tosh Desai. With the barely intermediate levels of experience that we had back then, removal and reinstallation took about 6 hours and 4 hours respectively, in a fully equipped auto shop with a lift and engine hoist.

The parts prices listed below are from Mazda's Competition Parts Department. (State sales tax plus shipping from MazdaComp to Bret's shop added another $140 or so.) As an autocrosser, I'm eligible to get these substantially discounted prices, often as much as 1/2 off the dealer's retail pricing. Any form of racing will qualify for admission to the program, provided you can present race results for at least two events per year. Call MazdaComp at 800-435-2508 for details.

Note the use of two new rotor housings, which are vital to the longevity of the rebuilt engine. Also, note the use of 93-95 corner seal springs, as recommended in the MazdaComp catalog for enhanced strength under high temperatures. You might even want to consider two brand new rotors, as well, depending on how long you want this engine to last. MazdaTrix has a very good set of pages on their various quality levels of engine rebuilds. Do yourself a big favor and check them out in the engines section of their web site and in their printed catalog. Pay careful attention to the differences in prices, warranties and parts used in their various "levels" of engine rebuilding.

Lastly, don't forget to replace all of those parts that you've been thinking about replacing for the last few years: belts, all cooling hoses, and a new thermostat would all be wise things to factor into the budget. Oil, coolant, distilled water and fresh filters should be a no brainer. Throttle body cleaner and some attempt at cleaning the intake manifold would be smart, too.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me, but I would recommend posting them to the 1st gen list for a broader range of experience leading into the answers. Good luck.
